From aspiration to action: How event planners can bridge the sustainability education gap

Aisling Pendlebury, Event Sustainability Consultant at Worlds Better, explains that although the path to sustainability is challenging, it's by no means impossible.

In recent years, event planners and organisers have recognised the importance of implementing sustainability as the new ‘normal’, acknowledging the growing expectations from clients, attendees, and stakeholders to reduce the negative environmental and social impact of their events. However, despite this widespread recognition, there remains a significant gap between understanding the importance of sustainability and possessing the skills and knowledge to effectively implement it.

Many event planners are passionate about creating sustainable, more responsible events, but they often find themselves overwhelmed by the complexities of sustainability. Sustainability in event planning goes far beyond simply reducing waste or using sustainable materials. It requires a comprehensive, collaborative approach that touches on every aspect of an event, from supplier transport and community impact, to catering and sourcing locally.
